So You Want To Race?

We hear it all the time.  Someone sees one of our cars either here in the shop or out at one of the local tracks and they say “I could drive that!”  Most people…ok, mostly men, see our cars on a dirt track and want to race so bad they could taste it.  Or they watch Carl Edwards any given Sunday and dream of what it must be like to be a race car driver.  Not a professional driver, just someone that puts together a team and competes locally.

Obviously, we have a long history of racing and supporting racers.  But the vast majority of people simply don’t understand the commitment it takes to race competitively.  But most people also don’t understand just how fun it can actually be!

A long time ago, I saved this article that talked about this very subject from automedia.com.  One item that the article had right then and it’s still true today, you better be committed.  And I mean, really committed.  It’s going to take up some time, maybe a lot of time.  So much that it can strain your family and professional life.  For example, the author from the article makes a great statement about the commitment needed by saying:

“Here is what’s required: Commitment in an abundant quantity. You’ll know you’re approaching an adequate level of commitment to racing when your significant other shouts, “You love racing more than you love me!” and you respond: “Yes, dear, and your point is…” I know talented drivers who aren’t going to make it in racing because they refuse to risk secure, high-paying jobs and loving relationships. And I know far more who have torn up marriages, squandered inheritances, and committed felonies in order to go racing. Others paid the ultimate price.

Are there other parts to racing other than commitment?  Good night, yes!  We’re not even talking about the car, the trailers, the parts, or even car insurance from companies like Aviva or others.  Honestly, there’s too much to list in the article but it still comes down to commitment.  Without that, you need to pursue something else to take up your time.  If you are interested, come see us or give us a call.  We can help explain everything and even how to save money if you want in the sport.
